Through their presentation of Ancient Sanskrit Mantras, Original Songs,
& Sacred Chants from World Traditions such as Native American, Tibetan,
Sikh & Sufi... "KIRTAN " (as presented by Suzanne Alvarez & Ellie
Daulton)... is sure to help engender an experience of renewed
Love & Communion with the Divine!
Through the medium of sung mantras, ( in which everyone is encouraged to
participate) we invite you to join us at a KIRTAN EVENT & experience
for yourself the beauty and power of this timeless tradition of devotion to
God through the medium of musical expression.
Led by Singer & Harmonium player- SUZANNE ALVAREZ, "KIRTAN" is both the name
of one of the forms of the Ancient Tradition of Bhakti Yoga, [ in which people come together
to sing mantras in devotion to GOD]... as well as the name of our musical group .
"KIRTAN" IS WHAT WE "DO" & ALSO WHAT WE CALL OURSELVES. As a musical
performing duo --'KIRTAN" consists of: Singer/ Songwriter/- Suzanne Alvarez on
Harmonium, along with the talented and versatile Ellie Daulton, on Guitar & Mandolin
Devotional Chanting/Meditation
KIRTAN is a Sanskrit term denoting a session of devotional chanting
(sung mantras). The chants we lead consist primarily of Sanskrit mantras
evolved from the ancient Bhakti devotional tradition of India. The mantras are sung
in simple Sanskrit, (which everyone can easily follow), or in English. We also
include some sacred chants and songs from the Native American & Middle
Eastern traditions as well as some mantras set to original melodies. These
musical chants & mantras are truly beautiful & so powerful that they open
the Heart & take us to the core of our Divinity... inspiring direct communion
with Spirit in any religion. The result is Peace within and without.
The lead instrument of a kirtan is the harmonium, which was introduced to India in
the 18th century by the British, in the form of a portable pedal operated pump
organ. Although the Indian people eventually threw the British out of their country,
they kept the harmonium because it resonated perfectly with their Sanskrit chants,
and adapted the harmonium into the instrument you see today. This instrument is
actually a mini-keyboard whose ongoing tone is propelled by a bellows which is
activated by the hand that is not playing melody or chords on the keys.
Its continuous drone sound, especially when accompanied by guitar, or
mandolin, ( Ellie Daulton) is uniquely hypnotic & thus conducive to the the peaceful
state of Bliss that is the goal of a kirtan session. The session is led by singer Suzanne Alvarez.
